Solingen, DE · 1976–present · active
German heavy metal institution Accept have been pillars of the European power metal scene since forming in Solingen in 1976. With Udo Dirkschneider's unmistakable snarling vocals on classics like 'Balls to the Wall' and 'Metal Heart,' they helped define the Teutonic metal sound alongside Scorpions. After a long hiatus, their 2010 reunion with vocalist Mark Tornillo proved they could still deliver crushing riffs with the same precision and ferocity.

Arakain formed in Prague in 1982 and became one of the most important heavy metal bands in Czech rock history. Emerging during a period when metal scenes in Eastern Europe had to navigate political and cultural constraints, the band developed a sound rooted in traditional heavy metal, speed metal, and thrash. Aleš Brichta's long tenure as frontman helped define the early identity, while guitarist Jiří Urban remained a central figure through many lineup changes. Albums such as Thrash the Trash, Schizofrenie, Black Jack, Salto Mortale, Apage Satanas, Farao, and later releases built a durable catalog for Czech-language metal audiences. Arakain fit metal scope directly through riffs, speed, guitar leads, and a decades-long role in the regional heavy scene. Their music carries the force of classic metal but also the specific weight of a band that helped make the style local rather than imported. Arakain's best songs combine sharp riffing with memorable vocal lines, giving Czech metal a recognizable voice and proving that the genre's power could translate across language and borders.

Dortmund's Despair hold a unique place in metal history as the band whose debut History of Hate (1988) was the very first album released by Century Media Records, helping launch what would become one of the genre's most important labels. A technically ambitious thrash and speed metal outfit, their three studio albums — History of Hate (1988), Decay of Humanity (1990), and Beyond All Reason (1992) — showcased the considerable talents of guitarist Waldemar Sorychta, who later became a sought-after heavy metal producer, and drummer Markus Freiwald, who would eventually join Sodom.

Devastator formed in Derby in 2017 and quickly established themselves as a ferocious entry in the UK blackened thrash underground. The band's music is fast, filthy, and deliberately hostile, pulling from early black metal, speed metal, thrash, and rough-edged rock and roll. Early demos and live material built a local reputation before Baptised in Blasphemy gave the group a full-length statement: snarling vocals, hammering drums, evil-minded guitar work, and a sense of momentum that prized impact over polish. Conjurers of Cruelty expanded that formula with a broader extreme metal vocabulary, bringing in more black metal atmosphere and death-tinged brutality while keeping the core of the band fast, riff-forward, and confrontational. Devastator's songs often feel like they are pushing through smoke and feedback toward a mosh-pit detonation point. Their strength lies in making familiar underground ingredients feel urgent: satanic speed, Motörhead-like drive, thrash attack, and black metal venom delivered with the energy of a band built for dark, sweaty rooms.

Dirkschneider is the Accept-focused live project led by Udo Dirkschneider, the German vocalist whose rasp helped define a major strand of European heavy metal. After decades fronting Accept and then U.D.O., Dirkschneider began as a way to perform the classic Accept catalog under a distinct banner, separating those songs from the continuing identity of U.D.O. The project matters because material like "Fast as a Shark," "Balls to the Wall," "Metal Heart," "Princess of the Dawn," and "Restless and Wild" remains central to speed metal, traditional metal, and the tougher side of 1980s arena heaviness. Udo's voice is the anchor: nasal, serrated, instantly recognizable, and built for choruses that sound like chants from a steel mill. Dirkschneider's recordings and tours have emphasized faithful, muscular versions of the old songs rather than radical reinterpretation, but that approach suits the material. The appeal is continuity, not reinvention. Dirkschneider keeps a historically important metal voice in direct contact with the songs that made it iconic, letting newer audiences hear why Accept's riff language still carries authority.

Helloween are one of power metal's defining bands, turning speed metal velocity, twin-guitar melody, and soaring vocals into a template that reshaped European heavy metal. The early Walls of Jericho material still carried a raw, thrashing edge with Kai Hansen singing and playing guitar, but the Keeper of the Seven Keys albums expanded the band's reach dramatically after Michael Kiske entered on vocals. Those records established the combination that became central to the style: fast drums, harmonized leads, heroic choruses, fantasy-colored scale, and a sense of brightness that did not sacrifice force. Later eras with Andi Deris kept the band active through lineup changes and added a harder, earthier vocal character, while the Pumpkins United reunion brought Hansen and Kiske back into the fold alongside Deris for a three-singer, seven-member version of the band. Helloween's catalog is vast, but its core achievement remains clear: making melodic metal feel fast, grand, technically sharp, and emotionally huge.

Portrait are a Swedish heavy metal band formed in 2005 in Kristianstad, Skåne, building their sound on the twin pillars of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and classic occult heavy metal. Signed to Metal Blade Records, the band has released six studio albums, from their self-titled 2008 debut through the 17th-century concept album The Host in 2024, maintaining a consistent focus on dark, riff-driven songwriting and dramatic, operatic vocals throughout.

Primal Fear formed in Germany in 1997 around vocalist Ralf Scheepers and bassist Mat Sinner, bringing together musicians with deep ties to European heavy metal. From the self-titled debut onward, the band specialized in power metal with a sharper, steelier edge than many symphonic peers: high-register vocals, double-kick propulsion, Judas Priest-style riffing, and choruses built for maximum lift. Albums such as Jaws of Death, Nuclear Fire, Black Sun, Seven Seals, New Religion, Rulebreaker, Apocalypse, Metal Commando, Code Red, and Domination show a remarkably consistent commitment to traditional heavy metal values, even as lineups and labels changed. Scheepers's voice is the obvious focal point, but Primal Fear also depend on guitar teams that keep the songs muscular rather than merely melodic. Their best material balances speed and precision with direct, fist-raising hooks, making the band a reliable force for listeners who want power metal without excessive sweetness. Primal Fear's history is not one of trend chasing; it is a long campaign for classic metal intensity delivered with modern production force.

UK heavy metal revivalists Tailgunner proudly carry the banner of the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal, channeling the spirit of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Motorhead into their galloping, riff-driven sound. Founded by bassist Tom Hewson and named after the Iron Maiden song, the band released their debut 'Guns for Hire' in 2023 before signing to Napalm Records for 2026's 'Midnight Blitz,' produced by legendary guitarist K.K. Downing of Judas Priest. Their rapid ascent through the European metal festival circuit reflects a genuine hunger for traditional heavy metal craftsmanship.
