Carnival in Coal formed in Amiens, France in 1995, conceived by vocalist Arno Strobl and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn as a collision of Mr. Bungle-style avant-garde absurdism and the brute force of death and black metal. The band signed to Season of Mist and later Earache's Elitist sublabel, releasing records including Viva La Vida (1999), French Cancan (1999), Fear Not Carnival in Coal, and Collection Prestige (2005). They disbanded in 2007 and briefly revived the project in 2014.
