Finnish cello-metal pioneers Apocalyptica began as a Metallica tribute act at the Sibelius Academy before evolving into one of metal's most unique ensembles, performing original heavy music on classical cellos. Their genre-defying catalog spans from thrash-cello instrumentals to collaborations with vocalists like Corey Taylor and Brent Smith, proving that distorted cellos can be every bit as devastating as guitars.

Dark Sarah is the symphonic metal project of Finnish soprano Heidi Parviainen, launched in 2012 following her departure from Amberian Dawn and conceived as a vehicle for elaborate theatrical concept albums that blend classically trained vocals with cinematic orchestration and gothic atmospherics. Across five studio albums — including the Chronicles trilogy of Behind the Black Veil, The Puzzle, and The Golden Moth — Parviainen has constructed a distinctive narrative world that distinguishes Dark Sarah from conventional symphonic metal with its literary ambition and operatic depth.

Founded by former Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt in the Netherlands in 2002, Delain became one of the most beloved acts in European symphonic metal over a fifteen-year run defined by the crystalline soprano of Charlotte Wessels and a gift for anthemic, accessibly melodic songwriting. Albums like We Are the Others (2012) and The Human Contradiction (2014) cemented their fanbase across multiple continents, before Wessels' departure in 2021 led to a significant lineup upheaval and the continuation of the band under Westerholt's sole direction.

Exit Eden is a symphonic metal supergroup assembled in 2017 at Elephant Studios in Flensburg, Germany, featuring vocalists Amanda Somerville (Avantasia), Marina La Torraca (Phantom Elite), Clémentine Delauney (Visions of Atlantis), and Anna Brunner. The project was conceived to demonstrate that pop songs could be credibly transformed into metal arrangements, and their debut album Rhapsodies in Black (2017) on Napalm Records — covering songs by Rihanna, Madonna, and Lady Gaga — reached number 15 on the German album charts. Their second album Femmes Fatales (2024) shifted toward original songwriting while retaining the melodic, symphonic template.

Eye of Melian is a Dutch symphonic and neoclassical metal project founded around 2021 by Delain and Within Temptation keyboardist and composer Martijn Westerholt, alongside American lyricist Robin La Joy. The project features Finnish vocalist Johanna Kurkela (Auri) and orchestral arranger Mikko P. Mustonen, with guest appearances from Troy Donockley (Nightwish) on the debut album Legends of Light (2022) on Napalm Records. Their follow-up Forest of Forgetting (2026), also on Napalm Records, continued the project's focus on lush, Tolkien-influenced fantasy orchestration.

Floor Jansen is a Dutch vocalist whose solo work is inseparable from a much longer metal history with After Forever, ReVamp, and Nightwish. As a solo artist, she moved into a broader rock and pop space after renewed Dutch mainstream attention, but the scale and technique of her singing still come from symphonic metal training. Singles such as "Fire," "Storm," "Me Without You," and the album Paragon showed a more personal side of her writing, trading full-band metal density for sweeping arrangements, theatrical dynamics, and songs about grief, resilience, motherhood, and self-definition. That shift did not erase her heavier identity; it reframed it. Jansen's voice can carry operatic height, rock grit, and intimate restraint, which is why her performances often appeal across metal, musical theater, and mainstream audiences. Her solo material fits metal-adjacent scope because the artist's history and vocal language are rooted in heavy music, even when the arrangements soften. The best moments in her catalog use power carefully, letting a chorus expand because the emotional arc demands it, not simply because she can overpower the room.
Kemi, FI · 1995–present · active
Sonata Arctica are a Finnish power metal band from Kemi whose music helped define the melodic, keyboard-bright end of European metal in the late 1990s and 2000s. Beginning as Tricky Beans in 1995 and later becoming Sonata Arctica as the sound shifted toward power metal, the band built its identity around Tony Kakko's dramatic vocals, fast double-kick rhythms, neoclassical keyboard lines, and choruses that balance speed with melancholy. Albums such as Ecliptica, Silence, Winterheart's Guild, Reckoning Night, Unia, The Days of Grays, Stones Grow Her Name, Pariah's Child, The Ninth Hour, Talviyö, and Clear Cold Beyond show a group alternately embracing classic power metal and exploring more progressive or theatrical writing. Sonata Arctica fit metal scope directly through power metal, symphonic metal, and progressive metal. Their songs often draw on winter imagery, fantasy, relationships, wolves, regret, and emotional distance, giving the speed a bittersweet edge rather than pure triumph. The band's appeal comes from melody first: even the heavier passages are shaped around vocal lift and keyboard color. Sonata Arctica matter because they made northern sadness and high-speed metal feel inseparable, giving power metal one of its most recognizable modern voices.

Founded in France in 1996 by Nicolas Saint Morand (Hreidmarr) initially as Count Nosferatu, The CNK — the name standing for The Cosa Nostra Klub — arrived at their industrial metal identity after Hreidmarr's tenure fronting the symphonic black metal act Anorexia Nervosa. Their 2002 comeback album Ultraviolence Über Alles established a confrontational electro-metal sound combining martial rhythms, dense electronics, and provocative imagery, followed by the more orchestral L'Hymne à la Joie (2007). The band occupies a singular niche in the French extreme metal scene, blending industrial aggression with theatrical, science-fiction-influenced orchestration.
Waddinxveen, South Holland, NL · 1996–present · active
Within Temptation formed in Waddinxveen in 1996 around Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt, first developing a gothic and doom-influenced symphonic metal sound before becoming one of the Netherlands' most internationally recognized heavy bands. Enter introduced the darker early style, but Mother Earth gave the band a broader identity through folk-like melodies, orchestral atmosphere, and den Adel's soaring vocal lines. The Silent Force and The Heart of Everything pushed the music toward larger symphonic arrangements and more direct metal hooks, while later albums such as The Unforgiving, Hydra, Resist, and Bleed Out incorporated modern rock production, electronic elements, and collaborations without abandoning the dramatic vocal center. The band's history is marked by scale: choirs, strings, cinematic intros, and arena-ready choruses are used to heighten songs rather than simply decorate them. Within Temptation's metal identity comes from heavy guitars and gothic tension, but their lasting signature is the union of dark romantic atmosphere, polished melodic songwriting, political urgency in later work, and expansive symphonic force while keeping den Adel's voice as the anchor.
