London's Bush rode the grunge wave to massive commercial success in the mid-1990s, with Gavin Rossdale's brooding vocals and the band's heavy, radio-friendly alternative rock on 'Sixteen Stone' and 'Razorblade Suitcase' selling millions of copies worldwide. Though more popular in America than their native UK, Bush's string of hit singles including 'Glycerine,' 'Machinehead,' and 'Swallowed' made them one of the decade's defining rock acts.
James and the Cold Gun play guitar rock with the immediacy of a garage band and the muscle of post-grunge. Built around James Joseph and James Biss, the project grew from loud, self-recorded ideas into a full live band known for direct riffs, rough-edged hooks, and songs that waste little time getting to impact. "Long Way Home" helped open a wider path for the band, and the False Start EP and self-titled debut preserved the sense of a band making noise in the room rather than polishing away every scar. Their sound nods to early-2000s guitar rock, punk 'n' roll, Queens of the Stone Age grit, and the heavier side of alternative radio without becoming a nostalgia exercise. The vocals are melodic but shouted hard enough to keep the choruses raw, while the guitars favor fuzz, attack, and forward motion. James and the Cold Gun are at their best when the songs feel like compact collisions: loud, catchy, sweaty, and built for a low ceiling.
Finnish rockers The Rasmus became an international sensation with 'In the Shadows' from their 2003 album 'Dead Letters,' a dark, brooding single that topped charts across Europe and became one of the most recognizable rock songs of the decade. Led by vocalist Lauri Ylonen's distinctive, melancholic delivery and the band's gothic-tinged alternative rock, The Rasmus have been one of Finland's biggest musical exports since the mid-1990s. Their 2022 Eurovision entry for Finland reintroduced them to a new generation, demonstrating the enduring appeal of their atmospheric, emotionally charged songwriting.
