CELESTE formed in Lyon, France in 2005, emerging from that city's hardcore punk scene and gradually fusing black metal harshness, sludge heaviness, and post-hardcore dynamics into an unrelenting and emotionally suffocating sound. The band released their debut full-length Nihiliste(s) in 2008 on Denovali Records and followed it with a series of similarly dense French-language records, before signing to Nuclear Blast for Assassine(s) in 2022. Lyrically, the band confronts domestic violence, systemic cruelty, and extremism, and they are known for performances in unconventional spaces such as a Soviet-era prison and a medieval Vilnius church.

Their debut A Head Full of Moonlight (2015) and follow-ups We Will All Be Gone (2018) and Raised in a Doomsday Cult (2020) on Metal Blade Records deliver intricate, melodically sophisticated music that draws from djent, post-hardcore, and math rock.
