Trail of Tears formed in Kristiansand, Norway in 1994 under the initial name Natt before adopting their current name in 1997 to reflect changes in lineup and direction. The band played a blend of gothic metal and symphonic black metal built around the contrast of soprano female vocals and male death metal growls, a pairing that defined their early work including debut Disclosure in Red (1998). Over seven studio albums released through 2013's Oscillation via Massacre Records, the band gradually shifted toward a tenor-and-growl dynamic in place of the soprano contrast. Trail of Tears disbanded in 2013 after nearly two decades of activity.

Triptykon was formed in Zürich, Switzerland in 2008 by Thomas Gabriel Fischer following the dissolution of Celtic Frost, his second celebrated band after Hellhammer. The project continues Fischer's exploration of extreme, gothic, and doom-inflected metal across two studio albums, Eparistera Daimones (2010) and Melana Chasmata (2014), both on Century Media. Dense, funereal, and deliberately paced, Triptykon represents Fischer's most introspective and stylistically unified work to date.

Tristania formed in 1996 in Stavanger, Norway, and became one of the defining acts of the late-1990s gothic metal wave alongside Theatre of Tragedy and The Sins of Thy Beloved. Their debut Widow's Weeds (1998) and follow-up Beyond the Veil (1999) established a template built on layered male and female vocals, orchestral arrangements, and death-doom heaviness. The band released seven studio albums over their career before disbanding in 2022.
Neuchâtel, CH · 2018–present · active
Trom from Neuchâtel fuse gothic metal's brooding atmosphere with the raw edge of deathrock, creating a dark, post-punk-inflected heaviness since 2018. Their sound occupies the shadowy intersection where Sisters of Mercy-style gloom meets distorted metal weight.
Berlin, DE · 2005–present · active
Tunes of Dawn from Berlin began as a gothic metal act in 2005 before evolving toward alternative rock, gothic rock, and darkwave, reflecting the German capital's genre-fluid music culture.
