Crownshift are a Finnish metal supergroup formed in Helsinki in 2022, uniting members who previously served in Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Wintersun, and Finntroll — including guitarist Daniel Freyberg, drummer Heikki Saari, and bassist Jukka Koskinen, all alumni of Norther — with vocalist Tommy Tuovinen of MyGrain. Their self-titled debut album, released via Nuclear Blast in 2024, showcased a potent blend of melodic death metal intensity and power metal catchiness, generating immediate buzz as one of the year's most anticipated heavy metal releases.

Dawn of Disease were a Osnabrück, Germany melodic death metal band active from 2003 to 2020, producing five studio albums that combined the abrasive Swedish death metal tradition with a more modern and hook-laden melodic sensibility, drawing comparisons to Entombed and Dew-Scented. Though they disbanded in 2020 after vocalist Tomasz Wisniewski's departure, their final albums — including Worship the Grave (2016) and Procession of Ghosts (2019) — represented some of the strongest melodic death metal to emerge from the German scene, with former members subsequently forming Hiraes.

Formed in Luleå, Sweden in late 1992 under the name Disrupt, Gates of Ishtar released three albums in rapid succession between 1996 and 1998 — A Bloodred Path, The Dawn of Flames, and At Dusk and Forever — each on Invasion Records and each regarded as classics of the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound. Their music blended the iron-fisted melody of early In Flames and At the Gates with icy black metal atmosphere. The band disbanded in the late 1990s but reunited in 2015, though they have been on hold since 2019.

Nightrage was founded in Thessaloniki, Greece in 2000 by guitarist Marios Iliopoulos and guitarist Gus G, later relocating the project to Gothenburg to more directly absorb the Swedish melodic death metal scene. Their debut Sweet Vengeance (2003) featured guest vocals from At the Gates singer Tomas Lindberg and established Nightrage as a high-caliber entry in the melodic death genre. The band has continued releasing albums consistently through the 2010s and into the 2020s, most recently with Abyss Rising (2022).

Norther was a Finnish melodic death metal band from Espoo, formed in 1996 under the name Requiem before adopting their final name. Drawing frequent comparisons to Children of Bodom in their early work, they released six studio albums beginning with Dreams of Endless War (2002) and Mirror of Madness (2003), building a devoted following in the Finnish melodic death metal scene. The band continued releasing records through Circle Regenerated (2011) before disbanding in 2012.
Helsingborg, SE · 1995–present · active
Helsingborg, Sweden's Soilwork were architects of the melodic death metal sound that defined the Gothenburg scene, with Bjorn 'Speed' Strid's seamless shifts between brutal growls and soaring clean vocals setting the template for countless bands. Albums like 'Natural Born Chaos' and 'Figure Number Five' pushed the genre toward a more accessible, hook-driven direction without sacrificing intensity, making them one of melodeath's most consistently rewarding acts.
Reading, GB · 2000–present · active
Reading, England's Sylosis, led by guitarist-vocalist Josh Middleton (who also plays in Architects), deliver a technically ferocious blend of melodic thrash and progressive death metal marked by Middleton's masterful guitar work and the band's relentless precision. Albums like 'Edge of the Earth' and 'A Sign of Things to Come' showcase riff writing that rivals the best in modern thrash, combining Bay Area speed with Scandinavian melodic sensibility. Despite Middleton's high-profile role in Architects, Sylosis remain a formidable creative outlet for his more technically demanding and extreme musical instincts.
DK · 2000–present · active
Founded in Denmark in 2000 by guitarist Flemming C. Lund, initially as Scavenger before signing to Metal Blade Records and adopting their current name in 2005, The Arcane Order draw members from Soilwork, Møl, Hatesphere, and Invocator to craft an expansive form of melodic extreme metal. Their Metal Blade releases The Machinery of Oblivion (2006) and In the Wake of Collisions (2008) established a sound blending melodic death metal sweep with thrash aggression and progressive ambition. The band returned in 2023 with Distortions from Cosmogony on Black Lion Records, their most technically elaborate work to date.
SE · 1990–present · active
Originating in Trollhättan, Sweden, in 1990 as Crown of Thorns before a name change forced by a US act, The Crown developed one of the most aggressive takes on melodic death metal of the Gothenburg era, fusing the melodic sensibility of the scene with old-school death metal savagery and thrash ferocity in the vein of early Possessed and Sepultura. The band released eleven studio albums between 1995 and 2024, including Cobra Speed Venom (2018) and Royal Destroyer (2021), and signed to Metal Blade Records for their final chapter before announcing their disbandment in late 2025 with a farewell tour scheduled through 2026. They are considered one of the most consistent and underrated acts of the Swedish death metal tradition.
