Finnish death metallers Convulse formed in Nokia in 1988 and became one of the earliest and most influential bands in Finnish extreme metal, their 1992 debut World Without God standing as a canonical document of the country's bass-heavy, atmospherically charged death metal sound. After disbanding in 1994, the band reformed in 2012 and returned with the album Evil Prevails, re-entering a scene they had helped shape nearly two decades earlier.
Dawn of Disease were a Osnabrück, Germany melodic death metal band active from 2003 to 2020, producing five studio albums that combined the abrasive Swedish death metal tradition with a more modern and hook-laden melodic sensibility, drawing comparisons to Entombed and Dew-Scented. Though they disbanded in 2020 after vocalist Tomasz Wisniewski's departure, their final albums — including Worship the Grave (2016) and Procession of Ghosts (2019) — represented some of the strongest melodic death metal to emerge from the German scene, with former members subsequently forming Hiraes.
Dieth is a death/thrash metal band formed in Gdańsk, Poland in 2022, comprising bassist David Ellefson (ex-Megadeth), vocalist/guitarist Guilherme Miranda (ex-Entombed A.D.), and drummer Michał Łysejko (ex-Decapitated). The project channels classic death-thrash influences with a contemporary heaviness, debuting with the single 'In the Hall of the Hanging Serpents' before releasing their first full-length, To Hell and Back, on Napalm Records in June 2023.
Fleshcrawl formed in Illertissen, Bavaria, Germany in 1987 under the name Morgöth before adopting their current name in 1991 to avoid confusion with the American band of the same name. Signed to Black Mark Production, they debuted with Descend into the Absurd (1992) and released a steady stream of albums across two decades, including Bloodsoul (1996), As Blood Rains from the Sky... We Walk the Path of Endless Fire (2000) — recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg — and the Metal Blade release Soulskinner (2002). After a lengthy pause, the band returned with Into the Catacombs of Flesh (2019), continuing their Scandinavian-influenced death metal approach.
Lowen create doom metal with a sense of ceremony, drawing Middle Eastern melodic language into slow, vast arrangements that feel both ancient and volatile. Founded around vocalist Nina Saeidi and guitarist Shem Lucas, the band uses heaviness as atmosphere as much as force: long riffs, death-metal shadows, stoner weight, and progressive structures stretch around Saeidi's commanding voice. Her delivery can sound mournful, declarative, or incantatory, giving the songs a human center while the guitars move through dense, shifting pressure. Releases such as A Crypt in the Stars and Do Not Go to War With the Demons of Mazandaran show how the band treats cultural memory, science fiction, myth, and grief as part of the same musical world. Lowen's strongest passages do not simply add ornament to doom; they let non-Western modes, unusual rhythmic movement, and heavy distortion reshape the genre from inside. The result is metal that feels expansive, haunted, and physically heavy without relying on familiar doom formulas alone.
Nightmarer is an international death metal outfit formed in 2013, built around German guitarist Simon Hawemann (War From a Harlots Mouth), American vocalist John Collet (ex-Gigan), and drummer Paul Seidel, who concurrently performs with The Ocean. Their debut full-length Cacophony of Terror (2018) marked an entry into the dissonant, technically demanding end of death metal, and was followed by Deformity Adrift (2023) on Season of Mist. The band draws from a lineage of avant-garde extreme metal, favoring dense harmonic dissonance over conventional technicality.
Ofermod is a Swedish black and death metal band founded in 1996 by Michayah Belfagor, taking their name from an Old English term meaning excessive pride, drawn from a 1953 J.R.R. Tolkien essay. The band's early single Mystérion Tés Anomias (1998) became a cult artifact in the Swedish underground, and after years of inactivity tied to Belfagor's personal circumstances, the band resumed with the debut full-length Tiamtü (2008), produced by Magnus Andersson of Marduk. Subsequent albums Thaumiel (2012) and Sol Nox (2017) extended Ofermod's reputation for theologically dense, occult-oriented black metal.
Omega Infinity is an international black/death metal project formed in 2018, led by Tentakel P. of the German avant-garde black metal band Todtgelichter and Australian vocalist Xen of Ne Obliviscaris. Their debut album Solar Spectre (2020), released on Season of Mist, fused raw 1990s black metal aggression with harsh electronics and ambient textures built around cosmic and solar themes. A second album, The Anticurrent, followed in 2023 on the same label, cementing the project's identity as one of the more unconventional acts in modern extreme metal.
Opeth are a Stockholm progressive metal band whose music has become one of the most distinctive bodies of work in modern heavy music. Formed in 1990, the group began with death metal roots before Mikael Akerfeldt's songwriting pushed the band toward long-form structures, acoustic passages, jazz and folk harmony, progressive rock atmosphere, and dramatic shifts between growled heaviness and clean melancholy. Albums such as Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation, Ghost Reveries, Watershed, Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress, In Cauda Venenum, and The Last Will and Testament show a restless evolution rather than a simple genre path. Opeth fit metal scope directly through progressive metal and death metal, even during periods when the band emphasized clean vocals and 1970s progressive rock textures. Their songs often feel like dark narratives, moving through sections that can be brutal, pastoral, ornate, or eerily quiet. Akerfeldt's voice and guitar writing are central, but the band's power also comes from ensemble dynamics and careful arrangement. Opeth's importance lies in making extremity and elegance coexist, proving that metal could be both crushing and intricately composed without losing emotional force.
