Celtic Frost formed in Zürich, Switzerland in June 1984 when guitarist Thomas Gabriel Fischer and bassist Martin Eric Ain dissolved their previous band Hellhammer and rebuilt with more ambitious musical goals. Their first two records, Morbid Tales (1984) and To Mega Therion (1985), were foundational texts for extreme metal, directly influencing the development of black, death, and doom metal. After a long hiatus, the band reformed and released the critically acclaimed Monotheist in 2006 before disbanding permanently in 2008 when Fischer departed to form Triptykon.
