Necromantia was a Greek black metal band founded in Athens in 1989 by George "The Magus" Zacharopoulos and Makis "Baron Blood" Kanakaris, distinguished by an unconventional lineup that replaced rhythm guitar with an eight-string bass and incorporated saxophone and flute. Alongside Rotting Christ and Varathron, they are credited as pioneers of the Greek black metal scene, releasing landmark albums including Crossing the Fiery Path (1993) and Scarlet Evil Witching Black (1995). Following the death of founding member Baron Blood in 2019, the band released a final album, To the Depths We Descend (2021), and officially disbanded in December of that year.
