Svartahrid was formed in Norway in 1994 by Istar and Forn, developing a traditional Norwegian black metal sound that earned them a deal with Napalm Records on the strength of a 1998 demo. Their debut Forthcoming Storm appeared in 1999, and the band went on to release five studio albums in total, including Sadness and Wrath (2007) and Ex Inferi (2010) through Soulseller Records. The band experienced multiple lineup changes over the years but maintained consistent activity through the early 2010s.
