Atmospheric Black Metal
Vienna's Summoning formed in 1993 and quickly abandoned straightforward black metal in favor of a deeply atmospheric, keyboard-driven sound rooted almost entirely in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth mythology. Across eight studio albums on Napalm Records — including Dol Guldur (1996), Stronghold (1999), Oath Bound (2006), and With Doom We Come (2018) — the duo of Protector and Silenius developed a signature style built on programmed drums, layered synths, and choral arrangements. The band has never performed live, functioning strictly as a studio entity throughout their career.
