Black MetalDoom MetalGothic Metal
Founded in Lisbon, Portugal in 1989 as Morbid God before adopting the Moonspell name in 1992, the band grew from black metal origins into one of gothic metal's most enduring acts. Their debut album Wolfheart (1995) and follow-up Irreligious (1996) established their blend of atmospheric gothic metal with folk and black metal elements, and 2006's Memorial became the first Portuguese metal album to be certified Gold. The concept album 1755 (2017), sung entirely in Portuguese, recounts the devastating Lisbon earthquake and is considered among their most ambitious works.
