Bathory
Bathory was a Swedish extreme metal band from Vällingby, formed in March 1983 by sole constant member Thomas Forsberg, known as Quorthon, whose first four albums—raw, lo-fi, and openly Satanic—are regarded as foundational documents of Scandinavian black metal. Beginning with Blood Fire Death (1988) and fully realized on Hammerheart (1990), Quorthon pivoted to an epic, Norse-mythology-driven style that effectively created Viking metal as a subgenre. Quorthon died of heart failure in June 2004 at age 38, ending the band; his two-decade body of work remains among the most influential in extreme metal.
